Making Claims on Travel Insurance

Author: Jackson Alan

Upon purchasing travel insurance, the Insurance Company will issue a travel insurance policy for you together with a booklet explaining in detail the procedures of making claims. Therefore whenever things go wrong, from just a lost luggage to more serious issue like a medical emergency, please adhere to the procedures of making claims on travel insurance. This will ensure prompt and efficient service pertaining to your claim and helps to eliminate any hassles or hiccups.

Now, please note that in the event of a medical emergency, it is unlikely that you will be given any medical treatment unless you pay for it first so it is crucial for the Insurance Company to provide a 24-hour international claim line. Your insurer should be easily accessible to your convenience, especially when you are caught in a situation whereby you are not sure if the Insurance Company will pay for the cost incurred. So it advisable that when you have the intention of claiming back from the Insurance Company, you should not make any payments until you have contacted your insurer, with the exception of life and death matters.

Remember to keep all the bills, tickets, receipts, police report or any relevant documents for validation purposes in your claim. In fact, you are required to substantiate your claim with all these documents. Usually you are advised to forward them together with your claim form and the Travel Insurance Company should honour all claims with the exceptions as stated below:-

  • Self-inflicted injury
  • Irresponsible in handling personal belongings
  • Illness resulting from alcohol, drug abuse or aids
  • Illness related to a pre-existing medical condition
  • Accidents caused by involving in hazardous activities
  • Unaware of certain restrictions and exclusions of the policy
  • Giving false information (details stated in the next paragraph)
  • Knowing in advance that your trip might be cancelled or terminated

The main reason for people to give false information is because they are afraid that if they reveal the truth, their chances of getting a travel insurance plan are near to zero percentage. For example, they may currently or used to suffer from a certain medical condition and announcing it may give valid reasons for the Insurance Company to reject their applications and therefore they resort to lies. Or perhaps when they are going for a business trip, they made false statement by claiming that it was a personal trip. Such fear leads to complications and frustrations. Rather they should be honest and open about it and try to work out a plan that is most suitable.

Lastly, it is vital to run through your policy carefully and thoroughly and ask for clarifications if there are any doubts. Ensure that you follow the safety precautions stipulated by the Travel Insurance Company.
