Sometimes, even though we do all we can to protect our homes, disaster strikes. Here are several tips on what to do and what not to do when the unforeseen happens to you.

Fire and smoke damage - What to do.
- Call your local homeowners insurance agent right away.
- Protect chrome by cleaning with detergent and applying a coat of Vaseline.
- Blow off loose smoke particles from upholstery and carpeting.
- Open windows to ventilate.
- Remove pets.
- What not to do.
- Wipe or attempt to remove fire residues from walls.
- Use food or canned items exposed to heat.
- Turn on computers or other electrical appliances until they have been cleaned.

Water damage - What to do.
- Call your homeowners insurance agent immediately.
- Ventilate wet areas.
- Remove standing water by sponging and blotting.
- Remove saturated rugs when hardwood floors are at risk.
- Stay out of rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.
- Transport electrical appliances to a dry environment.
- Freeze valuable books and documents to stop mildew growth.

- Operate electrical appliances while standing on wet surfaces. - Leave wet fabrics in place.

Vandalism damage - What to do.
- Call your homeowners insurance agent as soon as possible.
- Hose down egg damage from building exteriors.
- Vacuum glass particles from carpet.
- Save discarded spray cans and container.
- What not to do.
- Attempt to remove ink, paint or cosmetic stains. They may be permanently set if not handled properly.
